Happy ________! Merry _________!

It’s that time again.
It’s the season we all wait for, 11 months worth of waiting!

Yes, we stop thinking of only material wants and try to be a little kinder to each other. I’m not getting religious here, but perhaps a bit spiritual in reflecting.

We exchange gifts. We spend time with family and friends. We help others.
We can actually change the world when we change into our kinder and gentler selves.

So why is there this discord, even anger that comes out at this time of the year as well?
You’ve heard it. You’ve read it too.

It’s the complaints about what term to use. You can’t say Merry Christmas! It denotes a religious celebration! Your might be interpreted as trying to convert people. And not everyone believes. “Careful, you might offend someone!”

Same with the Hanukkah feast. Or Kwanzaa. Or Eid al-Adha.
Even wishing someone Merry Festivus for the Rest of Us can be viewed as anti-political correctness!
And this is just a partial December/January list of holy days, holidays, or celebrations.

And there are those who complain about being told to use “Happy Holidays” just to be safe. TO NOT TO OFFEND ANYONE. And all those who get upset about people who use the phrase “Happy Holidays.”
“I’m not changing what I say for anyone!”

OK. Enough. I’m declaring an end to this discussion. To all the rants I hear and read. Stop being so “offended!”
This is my blog so I can do it.

So Stop It! Right Now!

For the record, I grew up saying “Merry Christmas”. It’s a special holy day, a holiday, a celebration.
If I say it to you, I’m saying something nice by wishing you a Merry one.
Absolutely no attempt to offend. I’m not imposing my belief on you.
But if your automatic reaction is to be offended, well I’m sorry.
Tell me you don’t celebrate it. Or don’t, OK?

Just know I’m not intending to offend but to wish you something nice.
There. Done.

And if you want to wish me a Happy Holiday. Thank you. Same for any other holy day, holiday or celebration. Because I know you are wishing me something special. An opportunity to share in something you find good.

That’s it. No more, no less. I promise I won’t be offended.

In fact, I think I may have found a resolution to work on for next year.

I will resolve: To stop being so easily offended.
