I’ll admit, this title may be a bit confusing. Not to me.
See, I use my phone. Not just for emails. Or texting. Or playing games. Or taking pictures.
I use it for making calls. Talking to people.
Which brings me to my comment that Spring is coming. How do I know?
I received a phone message from Wilder. My 3 year old grandson. He’s the one I’ve written about who was thankful for pigs.
A week ago I was visiting him and his town got snow. About 9 inches worth. Wilder and I and his Dad spent about 40 minutes shoveling his drive to get my car freed so I could start the journey to my home 3 hours away.
So this past Saturday, I got his call.
He wanted to let Nanu know, that’s me, in his very excited voice that “The snow was melting. And Spring is coming.”
Now Wilder is not unique among my grand kids in calling me. Nico began calling me using his mom’s speed dial when he was 3. We had long conversations where everything I would say was followed with Nico asking “But why?”
To everything I said.
Connor, though, is straight to the point. “Hi, How are you, this is what I’m doing, OK I’ll talk to you later.”
Katelyn however, will tell me everything about her day, her school, her life, cheer leading, what her mom or dad is doing at that moment, with each topic separated only by her giggles. Luca is another nonstop talker where everything is funny, outrageously so!
Bodhi is the only one who doesn’t call. He’s 20 months. He smiles.
These grand kids, except non-talker Bodhi, all call me more than their parents do.
Which leads me to think phone calling must skip generations.
My dad would call me every night. Same time too. “Whatcha doing?” he’d say.
I really miss those calls now.
But just about every time I call my kids, I end up leaving messages. In fairness though, they usually do call back. Kris explained to me that their (his) generation just don’t call people, it’s easier to text.
All my kids do respond to texts, so maybe he’s right.
But I know me. I need to connect, to …talk. So I’ll keep calling.
And I’ll talk…to my grand kids. They’re still answering. And calling.
And there’s more good news too.
“The snow is melting, Spring is coming!”
I’m excited too Wilder!
Love, Nanu

Response to “Spring is coming… Or why doesn’t anyone use a telephone to talk anymore?”
John,
Loved your post and its clear that your family is amazing. I so enjoy the stories about your kids and grandkids. Its wonderful when we reach that point in our lives when we really have the clarity to take joy from the things that truly matter, and let the rest go. SPRING IS COMING! And I am ready for it. 😉
